A Statistical Analysis on Psychiatric Inpatients

Abstract
The authors reviewed the medical charts of the neuropsychiatric inpatients admitted to the Yoido Saint Mary Hospital, Catholic Medical College from May 1974 to May 1982. The results were as follows;
1. Total cases reviewed were 4690 cases.
2. Out of 4690 total cases, 2010 cases (42.8%) were diagnosed as schizophrenia, 969 cases (20.6%) as-neurosis and psychosomatic illness, 413 cases (8.8%) as manic-depressive illness, 279 cases, (5.9%) as organic brain syndromes and 238 cases (5.0%) as alcoholism and alcoholic psychosis.
3. The male to female ratio, was 50.6:49.4. As to diagnostic distribution by sex, it was revealed that among male patients, schizophrenia was the most frequent. Neurosis and psychosomatic illness, alcoholism and alcoholic psychosis, manic-depressive illness and organic brain syndromes were of the frequent rate in this order. Among the female patients, schizophrenia was the most frequent and neurosis and psychosomatic illness, organic brain syndromes and involutional depression were of the frequent rate in this order.
4. For age distribution, majority (61.. %) of all cases were distributed between 21-40 years.
5. For occupational distribution, jobless was the most frequent. The highest rate of jobless was found among involutional depression and paranoid disorder.
6. For educational status, the majority (65.3%) of all cases were high school or college graduates.
7. For marital status, married were 46.4% of all cases, divorced, 1.8%, bereaved, 1.2%.
8. Socioeconomic status revealed that 3.6% of all cases belonged to upper class, 48. 1% to middle class, 11. 2% to lower class, exclusively.
9. For family background, 47.8% of all cases had both parents alive. History of maternal loss was significantly higher among mental retardation.
10. 76.6% of all cases were admitted via out patient clinic, 14.2% via emergency room, 4.2% by pick up and 3. 6% by transfer from other departments.
11. 84.5% of all cases were admitted against their will.
12. The majority (90.7%) of all cases were discharged within 3 months of admission.
13. 69.0% of all cases had no past history of psychiatric admission.
14. 43.7% of all cases were admitted within l month from the index episode.
15. Among the methods of treatment, supportive psychotherapy plus pharmacotherapy wasthe most frequent one (76.8%). Electroconvulsive therapy was applied to12.0% of all cases.
16. 51.7% of all cases were discharged on medical advice, 16.0% due to lack of understanding, 11.8% due to financial difficulty, 3.3% by transfer to other departments and 0.5% by death.
